A more comprehensive analysis would show that this is how much Facebook itself makes in profits from selling personal data, not how much total money and influence that personal data is leveraged for across the various entities that purchase access, influence, and/or advertising from it.

  • The contract vs losses from the strike is about ~1 billion to pay the desired contract or 1.5B to just literally do nothing. I imagine Boeing will either do the usual maneuver, which is let them strike for two months and then, when the workers are softened by the cost of the strike (especially with the cost of living in the northwest), make a minor concession and get something very similar to the original contract they offered.

Alternatively, they can pull the manufacturing plans for their newer models away from union shops and expand their non-union shops. It was the case already that non-union shops, specifically in North Carolina, were handling contracts for the newer models. They said they’d move some of those contracts to union shops in the PNW, but if they were feeling like it, they could just double down on the movement to non union shops and turn the strike into a lockout by management (a “reverse strike”), retain who decides to stay at a lesser contract, and just begin a long-term movement away from their PNW operations.

Basically, I’m unsure (but I’m actually not sure that’s not rhetorical) that the union has enough practical, concrete leverage to get what they want. Since boeing is already hemorrhaging cash, now may be the time for them to pivot on how and where they allocate their labor costs. I wish the strikers luck though, their demands seem reasonable to me.

  • I think the real-life photo of like a dozen kids in a line in front of the hood and completely invisible from the driver’s seat of the truck is more impacting. It’s insane. People that drive trucks like that are seriously compensating for something.

I hate Elon Musk, so I don’t want to get into a whole thing about it, but the Model 3 and Y have some of the shortest front blind spots of all makes and models of vehicle, largely because their is no engine under the hood allowing for a short and low front end. I couldn’t find any data for other all-electric vehicles, but I would assume any fully electric car would be similar.

Bicycles have zero blind spot in front.

That makes more sense. Although I think the carnivore diet is stupid, most people that are doing it or similar diets eat organ meats, many of which contain sufficient vitamin C among many other important vitamins and minerals.

Eating chicken salad with a spoon every day seems like it would cause all kinds of dietary issues.

Recognizing that things are going to bad regardless of who is elected is simple pragmatism. There’s nothing dismissive about it at all. Quite the opposite.

Harris winning the election (which, in terms of the electoral college, she’s currently on pace to narrowly lose), will not decrease the amount of active fascists in the United States, so, regardless of who wins, there’s going to be trouble and there’s going to be a lot of work to do that can’t be done with upvotes, downvotes, or social media posts.

It would be wise for people to be prepared for what is to come. Ignoring it makes it worse.

Edit: for instance, there is a man in the woods near I-75 by London, Kentucky picking random people off with a rifle right now. I’m afraid we’re going to see a lot more of that kind of stochastic terrorism, which will not simply go way if Harris wins. There are serious problems in America.

  • The apparatus around him is exactly that: evil, selfish, and smart. Project 2025 is only one example of how the mistakes of Trump’s laziness will not be repeated. There’s now a motivated and strategic fascist leadership and engaged bureaucracy ready to be emplaced as soon as he assumes power this time.

Precisely. The real ugliness and violence is currently only simmering. The election is when the boil begins. And the boilover comes after that.

Remember: if Trump wins, there will be disorder, dispersed violence, and then state violence: mass deportations and the disruption and dissolution of various dimensions of the state itself as fascism assumes the helm.

If Trump loses, there will be broad social conflict, disorder, and intensive violence, including a rise in domestic terrorism. I’m actually concerned we will see something like “The Troubles” in Ireland. Federal and state agencies and institutions will be attacked as well as infrastructure: things like power stations and bridges.

There is no threading the needle here. Either scenario results in chaos and violence. Both scenarios result in an increase in danger and a decrease in stability. There’s no winning move. We’ll think back to this moment as “the good days.” Strap in.
