Apologies for the shitty source, I couldn’t find a better one.
Steamboat Willie is a public domain film now.
It is also a top NFT.
A $1.2 million trading volume for something that literally anyone can buy, sell, give away, remix, redub, do anything with and not give Disney or anyone else a dime to do so.
Someone please explain the world we’re living in.
Crypto Bros are literally the dumbest people in the world. Good thing they aren’t using real money for any of this.
I live in Canada. Our leader of the opposition is a crypto bro. He is currently leading in all polls (mainly because our current PM is unpopular and not because of anything insightful that the opposition has done).
Ugh, so sorry to hear that 😖
That is terrifying

TIL there are still idiots buying NFTs
I guess people still have money to launder.
NFTs are still a thing?
And AFAIK a thing that everybody with a lick of sense has dropped like a plague carrying hot potato.
Who is still buying NFTs?
Enough people to give a public domain cartoon a $1.2 million trading volume.
I literally can’t think of a worse use for that money. Even $1.2 million worth of literal shit could be used to fertilise plants or something
This just turns into greenhouse gases and unearned feelings of superiority.
(Theoretical trading volume) 🤣
Drug dealers trying to hide their money and college dropouts?
Drug dealers just use crypto and cash out immediately. Nfts are too volatile. I doubt any are using it to hide money.
Usually those that want to launder money.
How would that work though the ledger is public. How do you even get your black money into the system without leaving a trail?
A lot of people are about to learn the difference between trademark and copyright when the Disney lawyers come calling.
What be difference?
Not a lawyer, but:
Copyright is for specific artwork( the specific animation known as “steamboat Willie”), and trademark is more broadly for brands, icons, or names that are used by the company.(like, “mickey mouse” or “Disney”)
So you can now project steamboat Willie onto the side of a building, but you probably can’t get away with taking Willie(who pretty much looks like mickey mouse) and make your own movie.
Thank you for response.
…that doesn’t even follow the dumbass rules of cryptobro bullshit? Aren’t NFTs supposed to represent some sort of rights to the artwork?
Just tried to verify this. Very hard. I saw a steamboat willy nft thing with 2000 items with offers of 0.45 ETH. I think that means that someone is selling tokens pointing to an image that is public domain and someone was willing to pay 1000$ for it.
What a creative endeavor /s
Dumb question, I know so little about NFTs. Can more than one person mint the same URL? I think there’s nothing them from copying and pasting an image to a different URI right?
For fucks sake, I thought NFTs were dead already. I guess my expectations were too high.
Even PT Barnum couldn’t predict this amount of suckers.
Google “speculative bubble” to understand NFT.
