  • There are many posts preaching for the choir, but I wouldn’t call it an echo chamber. It’s more like a dead sound chamber where the ideas dies in agreement. It doesn’t bounce off the walls or resonate. It’s already there so no answer is required.

Lemmy would benefit from more users playing the devil’s lawyer, but I think it’s too small for anyone to use their main profile for that, and alt-accounts would quickly get blocked or banned.

Actual users with opposing views wouldn’t be of much help. Politics isn’t very nuanced these days. It’s not red or blue, left or right or whatever. It’s polarized into a new duality: Those that give a shit and those who are proud idiots. Lemmy is on the good side of this and will not benefit from being more accepting of idiots.

  • The largest QR code can hold up to 3 kb of data, which is more than enough to write a nasty virus in an injectable script if aimed at specific devices/apps. The main hurdle is breaking the app to execute the code instead of treating it as a string. It’s the Drop Bobby Tables joke. Developers hopefully don’t fall for this anymore.

Anyway. Making a shitty link and leading people there isn’t a new idea. You don’t even need a t-shirt. Hackers already place their own printed QR labels on top of otherwise real codes, and the user might not even notice, because they’ll be redirected to the right site after the dirty deed is done dirt cheap.

  • I’d say that it depends on whether you expect them to be there when you return, and/or if your presence is expected in the meantime for whatever reason.

Just have some situational awareness. Normally it wouldn’t be an issue to leave a room to get a soda from the fridge and then return. However if you’re in the middle of a timed game or while moving heavy furniture, then it would be rather annoying for the rest of the people if you just suddenly disappear without explanation.

  • You can arrange stuff like that and I can only recommend it.

My friends and I made a “guild” back when we were younger. As we were all young at the time, our original written rules were mostly about drinking and securing the dates in our calendars for drinking. As we grew older, it’s less about drinking, but more about keeping dates free in the calendar on which we are excused from our families. So we meet up a couple of times a year in weekends with no obligations from other stuff. It’s litteraly just agreeing to pull a day out of the calendar in a weekend. We don’t get complaints from the wives either, because they also have their bi-annual trips for their respective groups, or they enjoy a day without the husband for whatever reason. Actually it doesn’t matter if someone is married or not, it’s just the idea of putting a day in the calendar for no other reason that being the “guild meeting” and everyone around accepting it.

So… ar first we had a lot of fun doing the kind of stuff that dudes do (riding motors, shooting guns and daring to run naked etc.), but eventually we got sick of hang overs, bruises and wasting time, so we try make at least one “serious” event before getting to the drinks now. Sometimes we go on company tours. Maybe someone got hired somewhere and wants to show off, or they have a hobby to show. Sometimes we just arrange for someone to show us around interesting stuff. Some things do cost money, but more often they’re happy to showcase their stuff. Doesn’t matter to me. We’re here to learn, experience and understand all stuff that we wouldn’t ordinarily get to see.

Through this self-made “guild” we have been to places that are not accessible without invitations. Some might call it “networking”, but I mean, honestly, that’s not what we are doing. Sure, I learn stuff from these companies and we get a connection, and I would be more inclined to choose them for future references, but we are doing this entirely because we can’t drink from noon to midnight anymore.

Advertisement: I’d gladly volunteer my guild for testing company showcasing and reviews if anyone is willing to have us. We are 4-6 guys willing to watch you work. We won’t be initially drunk, unless you serve it to us. We have seen many companies doing the same stuff before, and can provide valuable feedback if you want it.

  • Nah, it doesn’t always make the news. I know of one time where they flew right over my house and there was no mention of it anywhere, so I tell this story every time anyone mentions those “routine” fly overs.

It was New Year 2019-2020 about noon.

The MIG came in from the Kattegat coast and roared through a fjord well below reasonable eardeafening altitude, which made me go outside to see what the fuck was going on. It got intercepted by one of our own F-16s and they did a few rounds of dog chasing right above my head before it flew like hell back towards Russia. The fucker must’ve dodged the Swedes on the way here.

Way out of line. It’s completely reckless to put some kid into a machine like that and have them fly this close to residential areas. Who knows what would’ve happened and how many people would’ve been hurt if the idiot had hit a tall antenna or lost control from the g-force or whatever. They were flying low, fast and swirling like moth being chased by a flyswatter.

The Russians are reckless assholes even in peace.
