A company in my city created an EV conversion kit for any cars years ago. As they could not get certification for all models, they made a partnership with the constructor and managed to have certification for only 1 model (Renault Master, a utility truck) and now the company is controlled by Renault (the constructor).
They indeed killed the competition…
Police may have better things to do but periodically they are still there giving fines for not having lights or cycling on the driveway, easy cash low risk
Aaah then it is not a retreat it is just an excuse to fire people and whine about regulations
I feel like this is the same for any animal species. Does someone has a map of world’s land use for human activities ?
maybe this one ? https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01284-8/figures/2
I got a bike for <10km flat trips (30 min).
An ebike for longer (10-20km), or hilly, or carrying stuffs trips, or very hot days.
A trailer for groceries.
And I don’t like to exercise! But I clearly saw an improvement on my physical and mental health.
My wife as her car for longer trips or when we have to move all family.
Thing is we have a fairly good bike infrastructure (bike lanes everywhere and some bike roads), but not good enough for kids or people who are afraid to share road with cars.
We need more bike-friendly roads (low speed on separated lanes), and make people conscious that car is not mandatory most of time.
sure, 2019 EU regulation, to apply in 2022 and 2024 : https://road-safety-charter.ec.europa.eu/resources-knowledge/media-and-press/intelligent-speed-assistance-isa-set-become-mandatory-across
you still can de-activate it, but you have to do it every time you run the car.
To stay in topic : In some cities there is already an automatic speed limit to 5km/h in certain areas (packed narrow streets in city center, around schools…) for rental scooters, so it is not surprising they want to extend it to all electric mobility. Even for cars speed limit is often limited at 30 km/h in city centers.
It is already the case for new cars in EU from july 1st
Waymo is going full kamikaze drone on Pick-up, next step will be SUV ?
Maybe this is a solution for oversized vehicules
Why not?
Bikes are a very good solution for nearby travels (<10km), and cargo-bikes when you have kids.
We gave up the 2nd car for a cargo, it does not takes much more time than with car for trips less than 10km (work - daycare - school - groceries - park), it is easier to park anywhere without being an asshole (looking at you M. “just a minute stop on the sidewalk”), to flow through traffic during rush hours (with help of bike lanes), and it is good for your finances (no gas no insurance no parking, easy maintenance).
But we still need a car when we need to move 4 people for longer trips, and it is not for everyone, for instance my wife never ride it because she is afraid in traffic.
Other issue is the price perceived too high compared to a small used car : minimum 5k+ for an electric cargo (which you will want cause of elevation), or 3k+ for a longtail, or at least 2k for a homemade electric longtail (yuba+bafang) and you have to add the price of accessories if you hace kids (seats, rain canopy). If you want insurance it is 10% of the bike’s price so as much as a car insurance.
Most of people are not ready for the switch because the car is perceived as more convenient (safety, safe parking, can move 4-5 people + groceries at the same time, weather-proof) and don’t want to change habits, most of the time commuters are alone in their car with no groceries…
Just test it once, you won’t regret this sweet sweet quality life (better air, better place)
Yes, every amenities should be at 15 min walk/bike max, that is the only way.
so now in top of entertainement systems on videos, soundsystems, drivers will be distracted with bot conversations. Awesome.
thanks vw that is very useful… How to pay attention to the road, and others road users already fragile (pedestrians, cyclists, motocylists) on a 1,5T rolling living-room-sofa ?
A car is already too much considered as personnal property and “vital space”, yeah it is a good idea to give drivers more of this “personnal bubble” feeling. /s if it was not explicit enough
Maybe you are lucky with your car, and know how to maintain yourself. We spent already 3000$ on repairs on our 2010 car and we have it for only 5 years. And there is more to be done (dampers, belts, corrosion on exhaust…). Even with knowledge and equipment (which I do not have) engines are complicated to maintain, at least here in europe with our anti pollution regulations, older motors are more robust but are now banned from cities. EV is a good solution for city/suburbs people with small range needs as less maintainance is needed. Better solution is bike and trains…
Ahah it is ready to take the job of pur politicians
“There is a joke here that all poor people are driving electric cars, and all the rich people are driving petrol cars,” says Malakhovsky. “Tesla is a common-people, popular car because it’s very cheap in maintenance.”
yeah, only a joke unfortunately, later on the article they give the exemple of a guy who spent 24k$ for a totaled Y + 25k$ for repairs + 4k$ for batttery change… because the guy was tired of paying 400$/month for gaz, now he is paying 10-100$ for charging. This is even more expensive than a new one
Then we should burn them
So you are afraid of cars so you take your own car… I fully understand that but it is all the problem.
We have to constantly remind drivers that road are for everyone, and not only to go full speed.
Here they painted bikes on roads and put speed limit at 30kmh so it is better, drivers seems more conscious, but we still see too much distracted people that don’t realize they can easily kill someone just by not looking constantly at the road.
they forgot to add deathsand chronic illness from air pollution caused by cars, not only nasty particles from gas combustion but brakes and tires dust, aggravated with weight
