A company in my city created an EV conversion kit for any cars years ago. As they could not get certification for all models, they made a partnership with the constructor and managed to have certification for only 1 model (Renault Master, a utility truck) and now the company is controlled by Renault (the constructor).

    They indeed killed the competition…

  • I got a bike for <10km flat trips (30 min).

An ebike for longer (10-20km), or hilly, or carrying stuffs trips, or very hot days.

    A trailer for groceries.

And I don’t like to exercise! But I clearly saw an improvement on my physical and mental health.

My wife as her car for longer trips or when we have to move all family.

Thing is we have a fairly good bike infrastructure (bike lanes everywhere and some bike roads), but not good enough for kids or people who are afraid to share road with cars.

We need more bike-friendly roads (low speed on separated lanes), and make people conscious that car is not mandatory most of time.

  • Bikes are a very good solution for nearby travels (<10km), and cargo-bikes when you have kids.

We gave up the 2nd car for a cargo, it does not takes much more time than with car for trips less than 10km (work - daycare - school - groceries - park), it is easier to park anywhere without being an asshole (looking at you M. “just a minute stop on the sidewalk”), to flow through traffic during rush hours (with help of bike lanes), and it is good for your finances (no gas no insurance no parking, easy maintenance).

But we still need a car when we need to move 4 people for longer trips, and it is not for everyone, for instance my wife never ride it because she is afraid in traffic.

Other issue is the price perceived too high compared to a small used car : minimum 5k+ for an electric cargo (which you will want cause of elevation), or 3k+ for a longtail, or at least 2k for a homemade electric longtail (yuba+bafang) and you have to add the price of accessories if you hace kids (seats, rain canopy). If you want insurance it is 10% of the bike’s price so as much as a car insurance.

Most of people are not ready for the switch because the car is perceived as more convenient (safety, safe parking, can move 4-5 people + groceries at the same time, weather-proof) and don’t want to change habits, most of the time commuters are alone in their car with no groceries…

  • Maybe you are lucky with your car, and know how to maintain yourself. We spent already 3000$ on repairs on our 2010 car and we have it for only 5 years. And there is more to be done (dampers, belts, corrosion on exhaust…). Even with knowledge and equipment (which I do not have) engines are complicated to maintain, at least here in europe with our anti pollution regulations, older motors are more robust but are now banned from cities. EV is a good solution for city/suburbs people with small range needs as less maintainance is needed. Better solution is bike and trains…

  • “There is a joke here that all poor people are driving electric cars, and all the rich people are driving petrol cars,” says Malakhovsky. “Tesla is a common-people, popular car because it’s very cheap in maintenance.”

yeah, only a joke unfortunately, later on the article they give the exemple of a guy who spent 24k$ for a totaled Y + 25k$ for repairs + 4k$ for batttery change… because the guy was tired of paying 400$/month for gaz, now he is paying 10-100$ for charging. This is even more expensive than a new one
