  • Trying to use linux like windows is not always a good idea. Just like macbook cannot be like windows. Every OS will be different, they should accept this.

Although I get it, terminal in linux may not be everyones taste. I would suggest distros which let you do terminal stuff from GUI application. Like in linux mint, software updates can be done through GUI.

You should tell them to use linux without terminal for a while. As they use and get acustomed to linux, then just teach them that sometimes, they have to use the terminal when looking for solutions online. You should slowly teach them differences from windows.

They might want to run windows apps in linux. You may install bottles for them but always remind them that linux is not like windows similarly macOS is not like windows. Remind them switching to macOS will have similar problems as switching to linux. Try to download alternative for those apps which can run in linux.

For this I would suggest linux mint, ubuntu, pop os or any linux distros which dont require much terminal use and have more GUI for it. Remember to show some other linux stuff which are not found in windows after a while and teach about linux in a slow pace as they use.

They should get experience using linux in a slow pace, or they might get overwhelmed

  • After posting, I thought this post was kinda lame cause there are so many memes you could find about something like that happening. Thought of deleting it.

I didn’t delete because other people might still find it somewhat interesting. Plus, I am trying to post in lemmy as a contribution to keep the community alive. So I left it here and commented that just to give a mark didnt really like posting this particular image.

This comment was unneccassry but just letting you know about my thoughts.

Signal or XMPP are good option

XMPP may be a bit overwhelming as you need to select a provider and a client. Doesn’t require phone number.

Signal is private and easy to use like whatsapp. Needs phone number to use.

Telegram is cool but encryption isnt enabled by default, would like to avoid it for this. Cool for public groups.

Edit: Teleram isnt good at all, dont use it. Look reason in the replies

  • I dont know much about writing stories/poetry, but for publicity in fediverse (I assume you meant in fediverse too) here would be my response:

Lemmy is good but the main part of fediverse is the mastodon clients (twitter equivalent). Most of the users use a mastodon instance.

So posting to mastodon and lemmy seems like a good option. Although mastodon will limit post text length. Better to repost or boost it from lemmy to mastodon.
