  • Sure, military industrial complex is probably the phrase you are looking for. I have no solution other than we tried our best in the US with having a civilian leader of the military, just it was impossible to foresee how much money would corrupt the entire political spectrum. All I can tell you is it’s established every society (no matter how big or small) is going to have to have some sort of defense - otherwise they will get pillaged sooner or later.

Problem is people with armies usually want to start conquests eventually… No one has figured out how to stop this through history other than having a bigger and better army

  • Full agreement. My heart is with OP, but it’s a sad fact of life on this planet that peace without violence or threat of massive violence just is not usually possible.

The truth is there are fucked up people out there, and worse there are the real parasites that seem to love licking the boots of horrible people (staring at Trump and his ass lickers).

Honestly one just has to look at nature - everything from the bacteria to the plants to the birds and mammals are in a constant fight to the death over their next meal or territory - us primates have not been able to escape it, and I don’t think we will (staring at water scarcity, food scarcity, upcoming energy crisis, upcoming climate change crisis, etc etc). Sprinkle a little bit of population explosion into the mix, along with wealth disparity - It’s just gonna get fucking worse going forward I fear

  • I will totally agree with you it all does come down to money, but I feel Apple/Tim Cook is still principled in this regard - he has made a stand that the customer is not the product, and the investors/share holders appear to respect this boundary so far. All that is needed is a shithead CEO to come in and squeeze every cent, which at that point might very well be to monetize users like Google. Anything can change tomorrow.

Btw I’m a hobbyist security researcher, and the more I study Apple/iOS/MacOS, the more impressed I am. I don’t actually have any apple devices, but I’m really starting to consider it

    Inb4 Linux

  • Let’s be real here, google and every other company sells you out to their advertisers instantly and even double dip and triple dip on your info wherever they can. Apple doesn’t and they take their security seriously. Feds are always crying about how hard it is to break into iphones, telcos are complaining how apple protects it’s users (because telcos have an interest in monetizing those apple users), and the payouts for finding security vulnerabilities for apple products are very high.

Google and apple are absolutely on different ends of the spectrum of user privacy and security

  • Michael Burry (guy from the big short) has been doing the same. We all know climate change is going to fuck us, we all know we are headed towards serious water shortages, etc - these guys also know and have money to position themselves - for what final gameplan I don’t know, but at least with Gates his recent history has shown a care for the greater good for humanity at least. Can’t say the same for other billionaires.

I know Bills history pretty well, I just see a difference between him now and how he was a ruthless businessman in his prior life. Maybe he has me fooled, but I don’t really see it other than people’s conspiracy theory stuff. Guys like Elon are another story though
