Thank you! This is what I was looking for.
Thank you! This is what I was looking for.
This looks like a great collection of things that are exactly what I’m looking for and I’m surprised I never saw this mentioned when I was looking for things.
Just a question. It says it’s built around KDE. Will it work right on vanilla Debian without jumping through many hoops? I can get around quite well in the Linux world but some things still make me stumble.
I’ve heard only good things about world building games like Minecraft but I personally never could really get into it. Maybe I’ll give it another shot. Thanks!
I guess this is going to need the use of a mouse and so not suitable for the TV setup. But my child likes paint programmes so I’ll figure out the best way to let them explore this without messing with my laptop. Thanks!
Looks interesting indeed. Thanks!
Yeah, I’m not wishing for two pointers either. The current setup with Remote Mouse software allows two devices to move the single pointer at the same time but since kdeconnect software allows sharing of files and notifications from phone onto the PC, I’m not sure how connecting two devices will work. Guess I’ll figure it out as I set it up.
I came across a reference to kdeconnect while reading related stuff but I really looked it up after your comment. I’m using Debian on my machine and am currently using free version of Remote Mouse which allows very limited actions without posting. Kdeconnect sounds like it could take care of that and more. I just hope it supports two person controlling the same PC.
This will be in complimentary to a physical button IR remote that I’m aiming to implement after this post. Thanks.
I’ll have to read up on what you mean using IR remotes to control a Pi through HDMI HEC. The computer I’m using has an DP output that I’ve used an adapter to feed to my TV HDMI. So I may not be able to use your setup. But it sounds novel and interesting so I would definitely like to learn more. Thanks.
That sounds like a good approach. I’ll try and explore this. Thanks.
I’m setting up a media PC for my TV using refurbished hardware. The biggest pain right now is controlling the interface. I got one of those cheap keyboards with trackpads but they stopped working in a month. Reading this post makes me wonder if I can reuse one of the old IR remotes lying around in my home. Generating shortcut keys and binding them might be easy but what can be done for text/voice to text input?

I would like to replicate your setup in the future. How do you connect between the two machines, using tailscale or something like that?
Does portainer, and docker in turn, allow taking/accessing something like point in time snapshots of containers like VM software do? They make it easy to tinker with stuff, knowing that if I mess up, I can go back to a snapshot and be good again.
I don’t have anything to offer but I have a question since I’m on a similar quest. I’m also a n00b when it comes to Docker even though I have best intentions to learn it eventually. In the coming days I want to set up a similar server for photos backup and I was hoping to go with Immich too.
I have heard that Immich occasionally provides updates that are breaking in nature. How does Tipi handle it in such circumstances?
I am in the same situation as OP and this is the route I’m moving along. I got myself a used 800 G3 SFF based on a comment in a similar thread a few days ago.
It feels like a fine machine that consumes less power, supports upto 64 GB of RAM (I got 2x16 with future upgrades in mind). But the most noticeable thing about it is that it has space for 2x3.5" HDDs that none of the machines this size have, apart from the NVMe disk I put in. I intend to put 2x4 TB disks in it in RAID1 mainly to store family photos and videos. I’m learning docker to set up immich properly- i don’t want to lose anything due to my stupidity in updating things.
I have about a dozen questions regarding the same but I’m scared to put them all in a single post. But I’m trying to follow advice on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCDmHljsinY and hoping things will turn out fine. Based on their recommendation, I’ve also obtained a used g4560 processor to replace the existing dual core processor (i think it is 4400 or something like that) it came with. I hope it’ll be sufficient for stremio/torrentio/RD that everyone is so pleased with.
All in all I’m enjoying the journey of setting it up and my only fear is not of losing the data but of curating it to my liking and then losing the customisations in a fuckup.
Or they could connect their pi as well as their laptop to a hotspot created on their pocket computer masquerading as a phone. They won’t lose their internet on the laptop or pi that way.
This scares me to an extent but as long as immich provides some instructions on what to do to get back on track, this should be okay.
Also, what happens if one skips multiple such breaking updates? Will it be my responsibility to hunt down the changes and make corresponding amends?
And finally, while I understand that immich is not supposed to be photo backup solution, does it allow export and import of metadata, tags etc? I ask because I intend to set it up and I may skip few of these updates and instead do a fresh install a year or so later. If I can simply export my settings, face ID info, albums from old setup and import it into the new one then it makes things very easy.
Otherwise the phrase breaking changes does sound really scary.
For someone freshly interested in self hosting, what does breaking changes with respect to immich really mean? Does it mean that if I upgrade to this version, I have to rebuild my library, face tags etc? Or does it mean that things might stop working and some files might need to be changed, upgraded manually and things may get awry in doing so.
Cool, I’ll try this next time. So far the least damaging way I’ve tried is putting the thing in hot water. The magnet and the base expand by different amounts and it is relatively easy to pry the magnet off. But the thing cools down quickly so it takes a few tries.
Yes, i think squid proxy would do the trick too. It even has installers for windows.
