The principle of “do one thing and do it well” still applies to SystemD as it builds into many different applications which each do one thing only. The problem is that you require most of them to have a fully functioning unit system which makes it function more like 1 big product rather than many smaller ones as it actually is.

A lot of the hate I feel started with Pottering which extended to SystemD. And while it certainly had downsides it had less than the other i it Systems which is also why It has become the new norm.

But eggs != companion though. You can have an egg and just not allow hatching it if you dont have a free companion slot. How does it handle you redeeming a companion egg from expeditions or twitch rewards when all your slots are full. Presumably it functions exactly the same.

Yeah it’s one line of code to check the user agent but how many lines of code is it to customise each visit to the store front with only content as curated by the device the user is using. Even just user based curation is a lot of work and hard yet they do it because it draws sales. Why the hell would they spend all this work to not show you things. The steamdeck banner is probably considered as part of any promotion internally to the system so not showing it would require filtering every single promotion based on user agent and user logged in.
