The OP article also mentions that they are expecting to sell 11.6 million in the first year. They’re gonna be fine

If they burned through 5 million in 11 days they should be WELL past that by now I’d think…

For most things like games and movies, especially those that are highly anticipated, a huge chunk of sales are immediate. Then there’s a steep drop off in rate of sales.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve long since surpassed their goal, but initial sales are generally just a good indication of initial sales. Not much else.

They know these games sell systems. This and another recent headline about PS+ titles being Sony exclusives costing the company amount or whatever…
They know a huge part of why these projects are worth the cost is outside of sales of that game and as a mechanism to maintain market dominance.

This is why I’m generally okay with Playstation exclusives, aside from the fact that most of them are IPs that wouldn’t even exist otherwise. They’re okay with higher budgets to maintain that higher level of quality.

It’s a fantastic game that improved on the first games in nearly every way. They’ll hit it and easily surpass it, especially as more people get their PS5’s.

Do you know anyone who wants a ps5 who doesn’t have one already irl?

Personally I left consoles behind in the 360/ps3 era, luckily Sony has been porting games to PC.

I hope they continue that trend instead of slipping back into forced exclusives, I like being able to play the games, but not enough to buy a console again.

Or they could sell 14.4 million at half price, since the actual product can be copied and downloaded as many times as needed.

downvote it and move on, giving it attention only gets replies like ‘welcome to lemmy’ - not really helpful - or people looking to argue about pedantry.

I don’t disagree about the article tho.

Hell, I have a ps5 and now that they release games on pc it’s hard for me to justify buying anything for the PlayStation when I can wait to play on my desktop or steam deck.

There’s a bunch of recent spiderman games out. Remastered 1, Miles Morales, and 2? Is there any point to buying one over the other?

Start with 1 (remastered or not, changes are cosmetic and negligible). If you like it, miles morales is short and necessary story wise to play 2. They all play and feel pretty similar so if you don’t like 1 don’t bother with the next 2

Then there was probably another 50 mill or so put into the marketing and advertisement on top of that

It’s possible that that 300 million budget is already accounting for all the marketing expenses. Skyrim’s budget was 100 million, of which ~15m was marketing.

It’s possible. But I know in the film industry they will sometimes spend just as much on marketing as they did on making the whole damn movie now. And their budgets are generally reported separately

Don’t also doesn’t care if this particular game does but so well. It will sell systems and lock people into the ecosystem.

No, it doesn’t need that many. I read that it will have micro-transactions.
