The pink wave has yet to crest, the ‘Barbie’ movie has sold more than a billion dollars worth of tickets at the global box office, after just 17 days on general release. The milestone makes #GretaGerwig the first woman to reach the such heights as a solo director.
I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. Honestly, I mostly went because my girlfriend wanted to see it.
I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is hilarious, well-acted, clever, and surprisingly touching. Also, the soundtrack has absolutely no business being as good as it is.
The poster sold me. The quote on it, “Barbie is everything. He’s just Ken.” I knew exactly what I was getting into then and it was going to be excellent.
Me and my buddies went because we couldn’t get tickets to Oppenheimer right away. “Barbie smashes the patriarchy” was not on my summer movie bingo card, but I’ll take it! Ending was a little strange though
It was fun, but I did not get what the movie was trying to say
It’s that we all belong and should be working together.
!Except Barbie I guess?!<
Well she grew as a person and changed and that’s also okay.
Sure, I was just joking
It was fun, had great acting, and had a fresh plot. Who knew Hollywood could still do this?
I guess this is what happens when you give a director creative control over a project!
Looks like somebody might finally get her Oscar this year. :)
Barbie may be the most profitable but the Matrix and the Matrix Reloaded are still the best female directed movies.
And both are about their experiences being a woman.
Technically they were not considered themself female during the films. So it was directed by two guys.
I still have a copy that was directed by the wachosky brothers, it must be a rare piece!

Love to see these results!
I’m watching Oppenheimer next week at the Universal IMAX on 70mm. THRILLED
70mm was a thing to behold. Glad you get to see it that way!
I wanted to see a movie last week with the kids. It was either Oppenheimer or Barbie. The 2 hour movie won. 3 hours is too long for a movie. I can’t wait to watch Oppenheimer … while I’m on my couch.
For me it might actually be the other way around. Being in the cinema forces me to pay better attention, which especially for a long movie can be helpful. And imo there is no “too long” in absolute terms, what matters is whether the movie requires the time or if there is a lot of padding that could have been cut.
Havent gone to see Oppenheimer, but for example when it was released i went to see “Drive my Car” (179 minutes long and subtitled) in the cinema. I’ve since also watched it at home, but i am glad i went to the cinema on my first watch. It’s my own flault, but i am not sure if i would have had the same focus and attention when watching it at home or if i’d at some point would have gotten distracted by something.
