From the looks of it, legendary development studio id Software is working on a new version of its proprietary game engine - id Tech 8.
The Texas-based studio is responsible for some of the most popular shooter franchises in the gaming industry, including the Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake series and a new version of the studio’s game engine appears to be on its way. At least, according to a resume from an engine programmer at the studio. On Linkedin, the programmer, who has been working at id Software since 2019, briefly mentioned “id Tech 8” in the about section. This reference has been edited and now only reads “id Tech”. Luckily, gaming industry job spotter ‘Timur222’ screenshotted the reference, although this tweet has also since been deleted.
ID Software are Vulkan wizards. Absolute mad lads.
I know you’re talking about the rendering software, but vulkan wizard sounds like a dope DnD class
DnD x Star Trek
The crossover I never realized I needed
It’s a shame we have only gotten 1 game on id Tech 7 (Doom Eternal). I know it’s a highly specialized engine, but I’d love to see more FPS titles using it or this new version (Wolfenstein 3 please)
Dunno how interested I’d be in Wolfenstein 3 without Mick Gordon.
I need to fight mecha-Hilter, I don’t care if it’s in complete silence ha.
Can’t imagine it would be much of a fight based on what we saw in TNC
Meh, wake me up when they continue the tradition of open sourcing old engines.
I bet if Bethesda had never bought iD they would still be doing this.
Unity would like to know your location
I wish there were more games licensed to use idtech.
New Doom when?
hopefully its going to be more like Doom 2016 than Eternal
Yea I have a hard time articulating why, but I preferred 2016 to Eternal.
Also, I think Mick Gordon and id Software aren’t likely to work together anymore, which to me is kinda the nail in the coffin of these reboots.
I don’t think Doom can be Doom without its music composer.I don’t think Doom can be Doom without its music composer.
Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom 64 and Doom 3 would all like a word with you.
Maybe they should pony up for another Trent Reznor score.
You jest but I would love a moden Quake reboot with a squelchy, organic NiN soundtrack
For me, I think it’s the fact that Doom Eternal is moreso the thinking man’s Doom game, but I personally don’t play Doom to think.
I play Doom so I can bust into a room, shove my shotgun against an Imp’s face, say “does this smell like gunpowder to you?”, and blow their brains across five states.
Both games are great, but I think where 2016 shines is that raw immersion of rage and rampage.

id Software provided development assistance on Fallout 76, in the form of additional programmers. Specifically, they assisted with netcode from Quake Champions to support the multiplayer functionality needed to realize the game.
The creation engine is the disaster
Can you imagine trying to shove netcode into Gamebryo? Id developers on their first day.
Gamebryo was an MMO engine before it was a single player engine interestingly enough
It’s also used for the FIFA games, if I’m not mistaken.
And on the last day of ID working at Bethesda the “this is fine” meme was made

Snatching netcode from Quake Champions is a disaster. You know, that competitive multiplayer game with client authoritative hit detection. It’s broken in design.
So a perfect match for the creation engine!
CE is actually way better than people give it credit for. This “Bethesda engine bad” sentiment is primarily users throwing a crap ton of broken mods without any rhyme or reason into the game and then acting all surprised pikachu when that causes problems.
