I think this is really the way going forward with portable gaming.
- Lighter and smaller handheld
- A large screen experience in a portable package
- Privacy
- Not having to hold the handheld device oriented to view it
- Replaceable battery is a big plus too!
There is no mention of Linux as the OS but it looks as friendly to Linux gaming as any other AMD based handheld device beside the Steam Deck.
Anything that goes over my eyes is going to be a negative for me, and I’d assume many others. The second you take away my ability to see what’s going on in and around me it becomes a difficult sell. Same with VR.
The Deck/Switch/whatever allows me to play my games on the on the sofa whilst my kids watch TV/run around. It allows me to play whilst my family is around me, which is important because if I’m going to essentially lock myself away, I’m just not going to want to play. Which was VRs issue.
Not to mention if you want to play in a public space, on a bus or a train. I can’t imagine ever being comfortable with something that robs me of my ability to see what’s going on in that scenario.
This would be better as an accessory to the steam deck (or other handheld).
I would buy it and play in bed when my kid and wife are asleep.
Get a Viture One and install the XR Gaming plugin for Decky.
As someone with video glasses like those included here, it might be a step forward but it has a lot of room for improvement before it will survive mass market.
For starters, unlike a screen, these glasses must be tailored to your eyesight. If you wear prescription, you will need to fit double glasses or have some ability for the video ones to be prescription. And a huge problem in the market right now is pupil distance, or eye spacing/head size. Mass market wants one-size-fits all, but that means those outside the designed size will have difficulty using them if they can at all.
These are problems currently experienced with the current market like Rokid, XReal, and Viture.
And then of course there’s power, if we keep to 1080p we’ll need more computing power and battery than a Steam Deck screen, which some handhelds might be able to accommodate, maybe more so depending on the weight and shape trades of the new style. But so far it might be disappointing, especially if it has the appearance of a huge screen and still needs to low-res upscale/FSR to meet performance.
Just my thoughts. Still cool, but no confidence in it as a winner yet.
Woof. Their website is chock full of buzzwords (with lots of bonus spelling and grammar errors) with very little actual specs. My personal favorite: “All new flasship gaming processpr” [sic]
Oh, and this helpful bullet list:
6D Immersive Gaming Experience
- Vision Track
- Adaptive Posture
- Sound Comes Alive
- Ultra-Precise Vibrations
- Audio Vibration Enhancement
- Sensory Sync
I have no idea what any of that means, and they don’t explain any of it. But they do repeat it twice, so it must be pretty important.
Sure looks sounds dope. I hope i find someone buying irl so i can try it out. It is really hard to tell whether i would like or hate these glasses.
Controller reminds me of the Xbox Duke controller and that’s not a compliment.
