Counterpoint: it’s a fun game with a memorable tagline and people are just having fun repeating this tagline to each other instead of thinking of the setting’s depressing implications.

To be clear, I do agree with all of this. Deep Rock Galactic is a very shitty company. It’s just that the people who play the game might already realize that.

Every game has some fairly deep political undertones. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game, but it remains. Have you ever actually thought about the political implications from a call of duty campaign? It’s intensely political. But that doesn’t stop it from being the best selling fps every year.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Just because people are having fun calling out the tagline (or other memorable aspect) of a game doesn’t necessarily mean they haven’t grasped the game’s political undertones. That’s why it’s a bit unfair to assume the politics just flew over their heads just because they’re not spending 24/7 talking about nothing but the politics of the game. People are allowed to have fun sometimes too lol.

The example with Call of Duty is especially apt though, with the fans of that franchise blatantly lying to themselves about whether or not it’s a “political game”. Even the devs are getting in on it. There’s a video I watched once that goes into detail about Infinity Ward promoting the false image of their games being “unpolitical”. It’s a great video, I’d recommend giving it a watch.

It’s obviously all satire, the game is not some capitalist propaganda. In fact quite the opposite, with how ridiculously obvious the terribleness of the mining company is, it is purposefully dialed up to 11.

DRG is obviously a shitty company, but some voiclines say that they really enjoy the work and all they would donis mine for minerals anyway, or start their own mining company. Is that better? A expedition on hoxxes lead by some raging alcoholics? Dwarfs are expert miners and great at killing bugs, but actually leading expedition? Just look at the overclocks they are unknowingly install.

And yet every dwarven miner protests against the corp by drinking beers and dancing to the jukebox for great lengths of time.
