Just a note for all y’all Deckers, set Proton Experimental in settings to get it to boot.

Thanks for this! I just got home from work and was about to do some research on which version I needed to get things working.

I’m on my linux desktop, but Proton Experimental was set for me by default. Maybe you got “run other titles with:” under compatibility settings set to something else?

Edit: seems like Valve has now chosen Proton Hotfix for BG3. Says “Proton Hotfix selected by Valve testing”

There’s no way this game should be 100GB for the deck. They should have done what Blizzard did with D4 and offered it without the 4k texture pack bloat.

I will say to the people saying it’s too expensive I hear you but and I’m sure in a while down the road it will be cheaper but this is totally THE game studio that’s worth $60 for how many hours you can get out of this game.

I turned it to proton experimental and set everything to low and it’s OK at 40 so far. You get lots of effects early so it might stay stable-ish.

I have mine set to medium with FSR at Ulta and I think it’s pretty good. Need to play more to test other options though

I’ll probably play with settings again. At the point I had it yesterday, I had forgotten to make a space so had to waste time moving games around, then had 10MBb/s for an hour until resetting my router to get 40 and start making progress, so I really just wanted to play.

I wanted to verify that it’s playable. The controller support is a little bit of an adjustment but I don’t think it’s bad.

Controller support is actually quite cool. Seems like they built a whole new layout just for controllers (which makes sense because they’re gonna have this on Xbox/PlayStation). It’s a bit off putting after coming from DoS2 but quickly grows on you.

I want to try and see if I can use the track pad as a mouse instead of the thumb stick though. Would make exploring and navigating menus a bit faster…

I need to play with the controls options more, but I’m wondering if this is an either/or thing where you either use the “controller” scheme or you need to completely map everything for k+m. I tried to go with what seemed to be the most popular community controls and the game alerted me that the controller had disconnected; and weirdly the menu size and layout shrunk and looked different. I’d really like to use a trackpad as a mouse to have that option along with the sticks, but if not I’ll adjust to it. I’ve run into other controller issues, like where it says to hold “select” for the journal but it only works to open the map - you can still press one of the triggers to pull up a wheel with the journal, but it seems like there’s still some bugs to work out.

Not great. Have to drop it down to 540 with the Deck’s FSR because the in game FSR makes it look incredibly blurry. Also, the FPS cap in game sucks, so you have to do it using the Deck, which adds a ton of input lag.

I wish there was a way to find the actual download size. It says 100+ gigs in the system requirements, which actually put me off from it on a metered connection. 54 is much more doable.

To be absolutely honest, the major holdup for me is the camera angle. It makes the game look like yet another RTS or DOTA/League clone, and I got tired of those kind of games in the 90s.

I know that the younger generation is into games with a “retro” look (and I’m proud of them for appreciating the old school), but it just isn’t for me. I prefer games with pretty graphics, a good story, and a first or 3rd person camera. I grew up in an era where bad graphics was the norm and you just had to put up with them, so I was always looking forward to the latest and greatest advancement. Younger people don’t have that problem, so they don’t mind playing games that look dated so long as they’re fun. Not my style.

I don’t think it’s a generational thing, just preference. I’m also old enough to have grown up with potato graphics, and after the Xbox 360 era, I stopped caring about graphics much, I just like solid gameplay. Different strokes for different folks.

FWIW Baldur’s Gate III is a very pretty game, despite the overhead camera.

Oh man. It took me two hours in the character creation screen and one of those two hours was spent deciding on what custom character I was going to play.

Haven’t looked up anything on BG3 and made myself forget that it released in EA a couple of years ago. So far, I’m just utterly amazed by it. Probably going to spend way too much time, that I don’t have, on it. Worth the wait so far.

I installed using heroic, tried using proton experimental with no results. Then added to steam and lauched forcing PE with no luck either.

Someone in some forum said something about installing a package with winetricks and now when I launch it thinks I’m using windows 7.

It screwed my install and I’m too lazy to reinstall. I’m thinking about refunding.

              I also I noticed I have

              –skip-launcher

In the box for launch options in steam.

I don’t have dotnet 6 installed either and running straight from Heroic fails every time. When added thru the steam client it works.
